According to a report by the French International Radio Station on September 4th, Smetah, who is visiting Shanghai, said that as a whole, the EU and China have created a good working basis in the fight against counterfeiting, but the measures taken are still not enough.
Smeita pointed out that she will present the annual report of the EU Customs 2009 to China and discuss it on the basis of this report. According to the report, last year, the EU Customs intercepted and investigated 118 million counterfeit products, of which 64% came from China. EU tariff officials are concerned that counterfeit products from China are further increasing.
The European Union and China have already strengthened cooperation in this area and established new mechanisms for inspections by the two sides. However, the EU believes that this is not enough. The cooperation between the two sides can be better, and it is necessary to add new anti-blocking measures.
According to the AFP report, most of the counterfeit products seized by the EU come from China, of which 90% are counterfeit goods from China. The EU also stated that at present EU Customs has seized counterfeit goods from Chinese goods last year, and Chinese companies are also becoming victims of counterfeit goods.
Smeita said that she will submit a bill to strengthen the EU customs inspection by the end of this year, and the European Union’s market and service commissioner Bargna will also introduce other measures.
EU says 95% of counterfeit shoes from China
September 6th EU Commissioner for Customs Affairs Smetah stated that the EU will soon ask China to take concrete measures to further combat counterfeit products. The EU side claimed that serious counterfeit products "will destroy the EU's bilateral relations with China."
